About Us

Future Quest. Here and now.

Working together to help more young people get into Higher Education (HE)

Led by UWE Bristol and funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), Future Quest is all about encouraging young people to get into HE, where participation is lower than expected.

Through the National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP), the Government aims to double the number of young people going into HE by 2020, increase the number of those from ethnic minority groups by 20%, and address the under-representation of young men.

Here in Bristol, we’re bringing together HE providers, schools, colleges, employers and partners, to help meet those aims.

The Future Quest Consortium

We are UWE Bristol, University of Bristol, City of Bristol College, South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, South Bristol Youth, Bristol Learning City and the Local Enterprise Partnership.

By working together, we can deliver local, evidence-based solutions that meet the needs of young people.

We aim to:

  • Increase application rates from young people in target areas to HE.
  • Improve academic attainment at Key Stage 4 and 5.
  • Improve educational perseverance (positive transition from Key Stage 4 to HE pathway appropriate Key Stage 5, and continuation within Key Stage 5).
  • Increase conversion post application to HE.

Our seven components for successful progression to HE

  1. A relentless focus on high achievement.
  2. Developing positive personal traits such as confidence, grit and curiosity.
  3. Strong speaking, listening and writing skills.
  4. Cultural and social capital.
  5. An understanding of educational pathways, university and the development of skills to make successful choices and progression.
  6. Parental engagement.
  7. Mental wealth including emotional resilience, self-confidence and self-regard (including a positive body image).

What success looks like

We’ll judge our success by an increase in the number of young people going into HE, the effectiveness of the programme, and how young people’s choices are widened and improved.
